In Belgium, jewellery made or imported must carry two hallmarks before it is sold: one showing the precious metal and its fineness in thousandths (a lozenge for gold), and one identifying the maker or agent. Every maker, trade assayer or buyer of precious metals must register in the Guarantee Register. Under article 44bis of the Belgian VAT Code, inserted by the royal decree of 30 December 1999, the supply, intra-Community acquisition and import of investment gold are exempt from VAT.
