French customs say a piece of jewellery must be at least 375 thousandths (9 carats) fine to be sold as "gold". Besides the guarantee hallmark, precious-metal articles must carry the mark of the professional who made or imported them. Sales and exports of precious metals such as gold are subject to the flat-rate tax on precious objects (CGI art. 150 VI).
