Italy's tax agency says the VAT exemption for investment gold covers only bars or wafers weighing over 1 gram at 995 thousandths or finer, with all conditions met together. Gold that fails any of them is taxable "industrial gold", and a VAT-registered buyer pays the VAT under reverse charge.
